Common Questions

Most Popular Questions.

First off, we are one of (if not the only) Oral Prep company that has both experience in the Commercial AND Superyacht sectors and this enables us to easily bridge the gap between where the examiners are coming from and what they expect but also where you guys are coming from. We are also active teachers in the classroom, so, on top of our 35+ years in the industry, we are actually teaching courses and modules as well as holding many other higher roles within the teaching fraternity and various maritime committees. If you go by pass rates, then we are consistently hitting the 90%+ pass rate so what we do seems to be working.

This is what we are here for! All of our Oral Prep sessions are designed to stress test you on a few topics at a time. This will find any gaps in knowledge (which we then fix), reinforce your knowledge, formulate answers and give you hints and tips across the board. Having all the knowledge is one thing, but getting it out in a correct and concise manner is a whole other thing and this is what we specialise in. We will be sure that you are answering things exactly how you need to but also that you actually have the knowledge required.

Apart from the obvious, some people prefer to work individually and others work better in a group. With the Flying Solo package the whole course is tailored to exactly what you need and you get 100% of the instructors attention and time. Working in a group is a little cheaper and others may have questions that you didn't know. Another benefit of the Flying Solo package is that it is a little more flexible in terms of the dates and times you want to do sessions. We also allow you to record the individual Oral Prep sessions on the Flying Solo package so you will have a reference of what was covered

Thats fine, all our Oral Prep sessions are designed to be dipped in and out of and you can simply buy individual sessions that you need. For example, if you are shaky on business and law you can just buy a single session to opt into that individual session.

Nope, you can easily rearrange the session on the portal after logging in to a time that is more convenient with no penalty. If you're not sure then please drop us a line at any time.

First off, there is no shame at all in failing the exam. Its a tough exam and some of the examiners make it extra tough! We are here to help, if you are booked on to a resit then our Oral Prep sessions will get you back into shape in no time at all. You don't even have to book a full package and can opt in to any of the topics and sessions you want / need.

Categorically no! There are a few ex seafarers (and even non seafarers) offering their services for Oral Prep but they offer sub par tuition and it may be tempting to book with them but, to a man, they are all well off the mark and sub standard. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. Professionalism is a trait we value highly and we very much believe in setting you up for a career and not just to do the bare minimum to 'coach' you through an oral exam. Over the past few years we have helped hundreds of students with Oral Prep and we have not received a single bit of negative feedback. We are an established and respected company

Not only is it strictly prohibited to distribute oral exam reports but you also shouldn’t rely on them. In any case, once you have read one or two of them you have read them all. You should very much put your energy into preparing for any examiner and any and all questions that come up. We don’t want to just coach you we want to make sure you are going to become a professional deck officer

Establish a routine, the quality of your study is far more important than the quantity. 6-8 weeks from your exam is the optimum time frame to start your prep. Get a small group of study buddies to work with that have their exam fairly close to your date (we can help with that). Take it seriously it’s not a game and avoid anyone that treats it as such.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The syllabus is large and deep and some of the subject matter is complex and we suggest breaking it off into bite sized chunks but we are here to help every step of the way.
